This movie is disturbing so if you have a weak stomach, consider yourself warned! Raw was a great film that is just close enough in my opinion to work as a film with zombie elements (the desire for flesh). And it’s written and directed by Julia Ducournau!
Justine is a first-year veterinary student. Her elder sister is studying the same course at the university. Justine was raised a strict vegetarian but, as part of the hazing rituals, is forced to eat meat. Initially this has adverse effects but she soon develops a craving for meat.
My Rating: A
Interesting Facts: At a screening at Gothenburg Film Festival, several attendants in the audience fainted and vomited (over 30 people left the cinema prematurely and they had to take a break in the middle of the movie due to all the turmoil); incredibly, the leading actress didn’t think the ‘Brazilian wax’ scene was the hardest one to shoot; and the raw chicken that Justine is eating out of the fridge is actually sugar (Garance Marillier said about the scene that while it didn’t disgust her from chicken, it did disgust her from candies for life).
