This is true, the zombie apocalypse does force people to reach backwards for the perfect weapons. It was a telltale point in World War Z (the book, not the movie!) about how the US Army with all its Future Soldier technology was patently useless during the Battle of Yonkers. In the end, simple .22 caliber rifles and a shovel that doubled as an axe made the most difference.
